As announced in the last issue of Oil Installer, an expanded HVO demonstration project has been taking place over winter. In all, 15 fuel distributors have been involved and 93 homes and businesses have been successfully converted, with a further 33 scheduled. The sites chosen are right across the UK and reflect the wide range of situations where oil heating is used.

• Almost a third (29%) of boilers failed to receive a scheduled check due to lockdown delays. One in ten did not receive a check at all.
• A quarter of Brits do not know that boilers require annual servicing, with a fifth (20%) of renters not knowing whether their boiler had been checked within the last 12 months

As we move to deliver a low carbon liquid fuel, we recognise that burning the fuel is only one piece of the jigsaw. The product has to be stored, transported and distributed to the end user. In Ireland, that’s where UKIFDA and FFI come into play.

By David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manager – There are around 1.2million oil-fired homes in Ireland and the market and legislative framework is different to that operating in GB. While we have a building control requirement in Northern Ireland (if a structural alteration takes place such as a new low-level flue) there is no requirement for any notification in the Republic and limited input from local enforcement in both jurisdictions in replacement boiler scenarios.
Although a single appliance is the most frequently chosen option, large dwellings or commercial premises often benefit from having two or more smaller appliances.
OFTEC has marked the 15th anniversary of its industry recognised Competent Persons Scheme with the news that registration numbers have hit the highest level since 2013.
Contrary to general opinion, a fire barrier is not there to stop an oil tank fire spreading to a neighbouring building or adjacent boundary but is to protect the oil tank from a fire originating from within a building.
As reported in the last issue of Oil Installer, OFTEC’s vision document is designed to influence government policy at a time when the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is still considering the responses to its domestic heating consultation, which finished in January.
